# Market sizing

> Build a sourced TAM, SAM and SOM estimate.

Sizing a market means two estimates, a pile of sources and assumptions that must be defensible. Hops builds both views, cites every input and shows the math, starting from your past work.

<Info>
  **How it runs:** Ask Hops, with a skill so the output has the same format every time. No automation needed.
</Info>

## What it does

* **Builds two estimates.** A top-down and a bottom-up view of TAM, SAM and SOM, so you can see where they agree.
* **Sources every assumption.** Each input links to its source, using web research and past work in Google Drive.
* **Shows the math.** Formulas and inputs are written out so a reviewer can follow and change them.
* **Reuses past work.** Hops finds earlier sizing work in Drive for similar markets and starts from it.
* **Marks what needs the client.** Assumptions that need client validation are flagged.

## Ask Hops

Copy a prompt into any chat with Hops, or mention `@Hops` in a Space.

```text theme={null}
Size the US fleet telematics market for Acme, top-down and bottom-up.
```

```text theme={null}
What is the SAM for mid-size fleets in the Globex market?
```

```text theme={null}
Show the assumptions behind the Northwind TAM and mark which need client validation.
```

```text theme={null}
Find our past sizing work on logistics software and reuse what applies.
```

```text theme={null}
Why do the top-down and bottom-up estimates differ, and which do you trust more?
```

Example reply:

> US fleet telematics, sourced:
>
> * Top-down TAM $14.2B, bottom-up $12.8B.
> * SAM \$3.1B for mid-size fleets.
> * 3 assumptions marked for client validation.

## What you get

* **An estimate in chat**, in the same thread, with the math and a source for every assumption.
* **A saved Doc or Table, when you ask for one.** Say "save this as a doc" or "put the assumptions in a table" and Hops writes it to **Docs** or **Tables** in the Space.

## Connections needed

Connect Google Drive so Hops can find past work. Each card opens Connections in the app. Web research needs no connection.

<CardGroup cols={3}>
  <Card title="Google Drive" icon="google-drive" href="https://app.hops.ai/my-hops/connections">
    Past sizing work and templates.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

## Set it up

<Steps>
  <Step title="Connect your apps">
    Connect Google Drive in **Connections**.

    See [Connections](/docs/connections/overview).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pin past work (optional)">
    Create a **client-acme** Space and pin related past work in Space context.

    See [Spaces](/docs/spaces/overview) and [Space context](/docs/spaces/space-context).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the skill">
    Give Hops these instructions:

    ```text theme={null}
    You size markets. Build top-down and bottom-up estimates for TAM, SAM and SOM. Source every assumption and show the math. Mark assumptions that need client validation.
    ```

    See [Build a skill](/docs/agents/build-a-skill).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Ask">
    Ask Hops in chat whenever a new sizing question comes up.
  </Step>
</Steps>
